The Golden Triangle Curriculum Cooperative (GTCC) is offering this event as part of their 2021 Summer Institute.
The use of hands-on math games has been well documented as an effective teaching strategy to engage students as they learn and master math concepts. This course will not only provide you with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to successfully implement hands-on math games into your classroom routine but will also provide you with a multitude of teaching strategies you can easily employ for in-person, in-person but physically distanced, as well as virtual instruction. The math games taught will use playing cards and dice or can easily be adapted to use cards and dice. Participants will also learn three simple ways to differentiate any of the math games to make them easier or more challenging depending on the grade level or individual needs of the students. Focus concepts include: number sense, place value, math fact strategies for addition and multiplication, single-digit & multi-digit operational fluency, mixed operations and order of operations, math expressions and equations, beginning algebra, simple fractions, fraction equivalency, simple operations with fractions, coordinate geometry, graphing, and probability. A comprehensive handout will be provided to include game boards, rules, follow-up math journal questions and assessment.
