Motivating Reluctant Learners: A Guide for Paraprofessionals

The focus of this course is designed to provide paraprofessionals with a deeper understanding of the factors and attributes that may result in challenges for students, who may then become reluctant learners. This includes reviewing the supporting educational research that investigates a wide range of influences that impact and shape how students are motivated within various learning contexts while recognizing that students have diverse learner needs. Based upon these understandings, paraprofessionals will identify a variety of strategies for increasing student motivation, while also exploring ways to further promote a positive learning environment conducive for all students to help achieve their great potential for learning. In particular, paraprofessionals will investigate relevant strategies designed to help motivate students, strengthen classroom autonomy and help students develop their own self-efficacy skills for personal growth and development. Additionally, participants will explore a myriad of ways how students can be motivated within a school setting. The course content is especially important for paraprofessionals, who may often be the first point of contact with many of these reluctant learners and who may be working side by side on a daily basis with these children. Building upon these foundational beliefs, paraprofessionals will explore a variety of strategies to help work with students as well as to help these students to develop skills and strategies to become self-reliant, within the never-ending rigorous demands of the school environment. This course is divided into the following modules: 1. Setting the Stage: Understanding Learner Differences & Student Motivation 2. An Overview of Reluctant Learners 3.
