SUMMARY:Citizen Science: How to get started or take it to the next level
DESCRIPTION:Join Suzi Taylor\, Director of MSU Science and Math Resource Center and SciStarter Ambassador for Citizen Science\, as she discusses how you and your students can get started as a Citizen Scientist. Citizen science occurs when an individual or group contributes observations or data to a larger – sometimes global – initiative led by professional scientists. In the K-12 classroom\, citizen science (also known as community science or participatory science) can complement the curriculum; help students build connections with role models and explore new careers; and inspire scientific exploration as students tie their interests and hobbies to research projects that make a difference in the world. This presentation will describe how to get started (or level up) in citizen science and find projects that match your students’ interests and curriculum. We will showcase several citizen science projects that work well in a K-12 environment. No matter your grade level or subject\, you will leave this presentation with new ideas for incorporating citizen science into your science classroom or extracurriculars. This event is hosted by Washington Science Teachers Association but free for Montana teachers who are MSTA members. Request a free Zoom link by emailing Don Pruett with WSTA – puyalluppruett@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Science Saturday III: Medicinal Plants of Montana
DESCRIPTION:The “Science Saturday” series provides teachers of grades 5-12 with tools to grow STEM opportunities in classrooms across the Hi-Line. Science Saturday III focuses on plants native to Montana\, and their historical uses. This information can be applied in Earth science\, biology\, or other general science classes. We will discuss what these plants are\, where to find them\, how to collect them\, and how to dry them. For the second half of the presentation\, we will create distillations and infusions of these plants to sample. This presentation is consistent with the district graduate profile and educational goals of teaching and learning as described in ARM 10.55.601 (focusing on teaching above federal standards). This presentation enables teachers to develop further experience in subject content\, teaching strategies\, and uses of technologies (per ARM 10.55.714). Teachers will have opportunities for feedback and reflection on how to tailor what is learned to various levels of experience. Limited to 25 participants. \n  \nContact Dr. Kyra Kaercher\, Assistant Professor of Biology/General Sciences at kyra.kaercher@msun.edu  or 406-265-4126 for more information.

SUMMARY:Phun with Phonics Phundamentals: Cracking the Literacy Code
DESCRIPTION:If you are ready to give your students the tools they need to soar as readers\, while aligning to your GTCC curriculum and standards\, this is the place to be. We will explore the shift from a whole language approach to a phonetically-rich\, scientifically-based\, systematic approach to reading instruction that really works! The education world is filled with buzzwords like “science of reading”\, “heart words” and “orthographic mapping”\, which can seem overwhelming. But\, we have done the research\, put it into practice and are ready to share with you what we have come to rely on and love. This is your chance to level up your reading instruction. SUMMARY:Playing with Early Numeracy
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, participants will be reminded about the importance of play and early numeracy in our youngest learners. Participants will also learn the combined integral role of both play and early numeracy in our young learners’ future mathematical (and academic) success.
