SUMMARY:Science Saturday II: Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:The “Science Saturday” series provides teachers of grades 5-12  with tools to grow STEM opportunities in classrooms across the Hi-Line. Science Saturday II focuses on Astronomy and viewing the sky. This presentation can be applied in Earth science\, physics\, or other general science classes. The first day of the presentation includes a nighttime observation of the sky in Beaver Creek Park\, where participants identify key features of the universe and view various aspects of the moon and planets via telescopes. This activity will cover viewing the sky\, a discussion about different ways of viewing the sky\, and a highlight of various measurements of sky phenomenon. Activity implementation involves learning more about seasons\, navigation\, and what is known about the formation of the universe. This information is aligned with the district graduate profile and educational goals of teaching and learning as described in ARM 10.55.601 (focusing on teaching above federal standards). This presentation enables teachers to develop further experience in subject content\, teaching strategies\, and uses of technologies (per ARM 10.55.714). Teachers will have opportunities for feedback and reflection on how to tailor what is learned to various levels of experience. Note: This presentation is dependent on the weather. If the weather is not clear\, an alternative telescope activity will take place on April 5\, 2025\, addressing the same teaching goals. Limited to 25 participants. \n*Note about location and time: \nApril 4\, 2025: 8:30pm-10:30pm Beaver Creek Park\, 17863 Beaver Creek Road\, Havre\, MT 59501-7929 \nApril 5\, 2025: 9:00am-12:30pm Little River Institute\, 300 13th Street West\, Havre\, MT 59501-5145. \nIn case the weather is not clear on April 4\, 2025\, the entire event will be held at the Little River Institute on April 5\, 2025. \n\n\n\nContact Dr. Kyra Kaercher\, Assistant Professor of Biology/General Sciences at kyra.kaercher@msun.edu or 406-265-4126 for more information.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science: How to get started or take it to the next level
DESCRIPTION:Join Suzi Taylor\, Director of MSU Science and Math Resource Center and SciStarter Ambassador for Citizen Science\, as she discusses how you and your students can get started as a Citizen Scientist. Citizen science occurs when an individual or group contributes observations or data to a larger – sometimes global – initiative led by professional scientists. In the K-12 classroom\, citizen science (also known as community science or participatory science) can complement the curriculum; help students build connections with role models and explore new careers; and inspire scientific exploration as students tie their interests and hobbies to research projects that make a difference in the world. This presentation will describe how to get started (or level up) in citizen science and find projects that match your students’ interests and curriculum. We will showcase several citizen science projects that work well in a K-12 environment. No matter your grade level or subject\, you will leave this presentation with new ideas for incorporating citizen science into your science classroom or extracurriculars. This event is hosted by Washington Science Teachers Association but free for Montana teachers who are MSTA members. Request a free Zoom link by emailing Don Pruett with WSTA – puyalluppruett@gmail.com

SUMMARY:MonTECH: Managing Transitions from One Activity to Another Throughout the School Day
DESCRIPTION:Do you have students who struggle with transitions between activities and environments? In this session\, we explore tools and strategies to establish routines and decrease transition-related frustration and behaviors. \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to recognize behaviors that indicate transition challenges\, identify three low-tech options to promote smoother transitions between activities\, and determine three ways to support a student during a difficult transition. \nRegister here.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact Katie Mattingley at katie.mattingley@mt.gov\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:PAX Good Behavior Game & PAX Heroes
DESCRIPTION:The PAX Good Behavior Game & PAX Heroes is a classroom-based universal preventive intervention used to teach students self-regulation and to build behavioral skills and stamina for focused attention and on-task behavior. \nDay 1: PAX Good Behavior Game initial training provides teachers and educators with the trauma-informed evidence-based program for use with students in schools and classrooms. The PAX Good Behavior Game helps to build children’s self-regulation\, resulting in improved focus and attention\, improved test scores and other academic outcomes\, reduced alcohol and other drug use\, reduced psychiatric disorders\, and reduced suicide. PAX is unique in arranging for peer reinforcement for exhibiting prosocial behavior and peer reinforcement for inhibiting problematic behavior. PAX truly benefits everyone by making the children the heroes of change. \nDay 2: PAX Heroes Training provides experienced PAX Teachers with strategies for students in PAX classrooms who continue to demonstrate behavioral needs. This training delivers explicit instruction in using the PAX Heroes Manual to identify areas of student difficulty and refine PAX Good Behavior Game® (PAX GBG) implementation to support those needs. PAX Heroes Training also provides instruction in analyzing activities and areas of difficulty for students and selecting targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports to improve their behavioral and academic performance. Prerequisite: all participants must be trained in the PAX Good Behavior Game prior to attending PAX Heroes.

SUMMARY:Phun with Phonics Phundamentals: Cracking the Literacy Code
DESCRIPTION:If you are ready to give your students the tools they need to soar as readers\, while aligning to your GTCC curriculum and standards\, this is the place to be. We will explore the shift from a whole language approach to a phonetically-rich\, scientifically-based\, systematic approach to reading instruction that really works! The education world is filled with buzzwords like “science of reading”\, “heart words” and “orthographic mapping”\, which can seem overwhelming. But\, we have done the research\, put it into practice and are ready to share with you what we have come to rely on and love. This is your chance to level up your reading instruction. Rest assured this will be a stress reliever\, not just one more thing you need to do. \n\n\n\nContact Brianna for more info: brianna@gtccmt.org

SUMMARY:Playing with Early Numeracy
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, participants will be reminded about the importance of play and early numeracy in our youngest learners. Participants will also learn the combined integral role of both play and early numeracy in our young learners’ future mathematical (and academic) success. Numeracy development can (and should) take place in a developmentally appropriate and playful way. Come spill the beans\, roll the dice\, deal the cards\, and get playfully engaged in mathematical tasks that will help your students see themselves as the mathematicians they are. Throughout this course\, participants will also learn how these strategies will support young learners to meet developmental milestones and academic standards. \n  \nContact Brianna for more details: brianna@gtccmt.org
