Building Better Number Sense and Developing Fraction Sense with Dori Phillips

November 5, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

| Free

Number Sense am includes basic skills that children need to work fluently with numbers, Good number sense allows students to compare and order numbers, understand symbols that represent numbers, differentiate between more and less, and understand quantities. When students do not have good number sense, the struggle begins. Spend the morning playing games that will build better number sense and understand how these skills build to core complex skills in later years.

Outcomes: Participants will understand key skills for subitizing, counting, and carnality. Learn and play games to improve students’ number sense in these three skill areas.

Fraction Sense pm will teach us basic skills that children need to learn to work fluently with fractions. Good fraction sense allows students to name fractions, compose and decompose fractions (operations with fractions), compare and order fractions, and more. Spend the afternoon learning the progression of fractions skills and playing games that will increase students’ “fraction sense”.

Outcomes: Participants will create a progression of fraction skills. They will play games and participate in activities that will improve students’ understanding of fractions. This session is geared more for intermediate 3-5, all are welcome to attend.

Dori is the K-12 counselor in Broadus. She has also taught elementary students from Kindergarten -8th grade in two other Montana districts, specializing in math instruction. She lives on her family’s ranch with her husband and enjoys time with her daughters.
